Empowering the Visually Impaired Through Technology

An Initiative by Rajmohan Nath Foundation in Collaboration with Srenibandhu, Snehabandhan, and Digital Compassion

In a heartfelt mission to bridge the digital divide for visually impaired students, the Rajmohan Nath Foundation, in partnership with Srenibandhu 1976, Snehabandhan 1976–78, and Digital Compassion, is leading a transformative project at Shrimanta Sankar Mission Blind School (SSMB), Barhampur, Nagaon. This initiative is bringing the gift of technology, education, and opportunity to students who need it the most.

Phase 1: Building the Foundation

Inaugurated on March 5, 2024

Phase 1 saw the launch of the school's first computer lab, specially designed for blind students, with features that include:

  • Computers equipped with NVDA screen-reading software

  • 100GB of curated learning materials (English, Physics, Chemistry, etc.)

  • A visiting computer instructor appointed to support the students

  • A commitment to provide a personal laptop to each student after Class X graduation

This effort was spearheaded by Chandan Kumar Bora and Dilip Kumar Bharatee, with generous support from alumni of Nagaon Government Boys Higher Secondary School — Ankur Goswami, Pranjal Bora, and Nilotpal Mahanta.

Phase 2: The Late Rupak Pujari Memorial Computer Lab

Inaugurated on May 3, 2024

Dedicated to the memory of Late Rupak Pujari, Phase 2 expanded digital access and was inaugurated by Mrs. Diti Pujari. Highlights include:

  • Additional computing resources for more students

  • Continued use of Digital Compassion’s 100GB educational resource bank

  • Celebration of academic excellence:

    Rupam Biswas, Mainu Begum, and Minakshi Sinha—all visually impaired students—passed their Class X HSLC exams with first division.

This phase was made possible with support from donors including Dhiraj Hazarika, Ashoka M, Archana Bharatee, Puja Phukan, and the Pujari Family.

Vision Forward — Led by Rajmohan Nath Foundation

Now under the wing of the Rajmohan Nath Foundation, the project is scaling with a long-term vision:

  • Laptop distribution for all graduating students

  • Annual donation drives for used laptops and funds

  • Curriculum enhancement through accessible digital content

  • Capacity building through regular training and instruction

  • Eye Surgery of curable visually impaired students

The foundation is committed to ensuring that every visually impaired student at SSMB is equipped to thrive in a digital-first world.
